Located in Christchurch, Catnap Cafe is the first and only cat cafe in the South Island. The mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxed environment where cats and people can enjoy each other’s company, as well as find homes for rescue cats.
The volunteers are well aware of the overpopulation of stray cats in Christchurch and the limited resources available to help them. Even though local rescue organizations do a great job and help hundreds of cats every year, they want to help them to help even more!
A cat cafe is the perfect way to partner with these organizations to increase the number of cats that get rehomed. Essentially, it is a large foster home for rescue cats and kittens that are available for adoption.
The owners are committed to providing a safe and calm environment for the cats, and their welfare and happiness is our top priority. They are big cat lovers and this initiative is driven by a desire to help reduce the feral cat population in Christchurch, provide homes for unwanted cats and promote adoption.
All cats have been health checked, vaccinated, microchipped and are up-to-date on flea and worming medication. The cafe works with the local rescue organization Cat Rescue Christchurch, and all adoptions take place at the cafe through the Cat Rescue process, but directly at the cafe. From time to time they also work with other rescue organizations.
In addition to providing people with the opportunity to interact with cats and potentially adopt them, the cafe also offers most of the key aspects of a traditional cafe, such as great coffee, delicious sweets, and free Wi-Fi. However, there is no full kitchen menu.
The cafe service area and the cat area are kept completely separate, and the cafe operates according to a council-approved meal plan.
